  My email was hacked and now Im getting nonstop emails from different WordPress sites. I literally had 10,000 emails this morning.. Is there anything I can do to shut this down?

  Hi there,

  I’m afraid there’s not much you can do.

  The emails you’re getting are not coming from WordPress.com, but from stand-alone WordPress sites at various hosting providers. Someone who managed to obtain your email address is using it, most likely via a bot, to create guest accounts on random WordPress sites, causing each site to send you an email for the new account. The only people who could stop this are the owners of those sites, and they likely don’t even know this is happening.

  I don’t know why someone would do it, but it’s actually quite common. I doubt that your email was hacked, though – to do this someone would just need to know your email address, they won’t need any access to your email account itself – and they likely got your address off a list published somewhere on the dark web.

  Regardless it’s a good idea to update your email account password if you haven’t done so already, but regarding the emails themselves the only thing you can really to is to set up a filter in your email account to automatically delete these emails as they come in, so they don’t end up filling up your inbox.
