error (‘Security key registration error’) while registering security key for 2FA on wordpress.com
-
Hi. I have a blog on wordpress.com and have enabled 2FA with text message. Now I’m trying to add a security key (yubikey, which works perfectly on other platforms) and it always returns the error ‘Security key registration error’.
Steps:
click ‘register key’
choose key name > click register key again
PIN is asked > PIN is introduced (is correct)
is asked to touch the key > ‘Security key registration error’
Thanks in advance
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You are trying to set up a physical key as described here? https://wordpress.com/support/security/two-step-authentication/#security-key-authentication
We do support keys that plugin into a USB port and work with FIDO2 (YubiKey, Titan Key, etc.) but your key itself may not work with all browsers. I noticed here that Yubico lists mixed support for Firefox on their browser support page here:
https://support.yubico.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016615020-Operating-system-and-web-browser-support-for-FIDO2-and-U2FI’m glad it’s working for you in Chrome, but for Firefox (which I’m guessing is your preferred browser) I recommend checking in with Yubico support as they may be better able to help with this issue.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yubico site says that yubikey + pin is supported on FF on Windows, so is either that their site is not correct or that there is some issue on wp.com with FF. Probably the former. Feel free to close!
