Etiquette / Protocol for links to professional ‘stuff’

I am one of those many people who is new to blogging. I have read articles on blogging until I am blue. I have what I hope is a simple question.
If I want to create a post based on, say, a Yahoo news article, many of which has been submitted by an Associated Press writer. My intent is to not duplicate or copy the article, but to editorialize regarding some portion of the content – AND I want my blog reader to also be able to read the original article.
It seems this would be a link in my post to the news article and then add my commentary. Anything I ma missing from a technical sense? How about from a content/copyright/public domain/ethical standpoint?

You link to the article, just as you say, and write about it. Summarizing it in your own words is fair, or you are permitted to quote some relevant portion, although nothing close to the entire thing. You put that quotation in block quotes, and preface it with a sentence or sentence fragment like “As the Guardian said today on the issue of Ugandan Discussions:” and turn that sentence fragment into a link. Some people instead turn the first few words of the quotation into a link, and that’s acceptable too, although less usual.
