Existing domain name and email accounts, how can I integrate/transfer?
-
I have a domain name, with associated email accounts, at another hosting provider. I intended to install WordPress there, but now I think it would be simpler to have everything in one place. I understand that I can register for a paid plan which includes a domain name, but I was confused about the language describing how to transfer an existing name. Two questions:
1. Am I correct in thinking that I can’t transfer the domain from where I licensed it (Google) so that the name redirects to the WordPress.com site?
2. Do any of the premium WordPress plans include email? I’m attempting to run a new nonprofit organization and need the email accounts.
3. OK, three questions. I’m also unsure about the hosting, I read about needing to find a host with Bluehost most recommended. Isn’t hosting included in the premium plans?
Sorry for the long post, just trying to drink from a fire hose …

Typo -I know I can’t transfer the domain name, but think I CAN redirect it so that it points to the WordPress servers. Just want to confirm.

Hi there,
1. Am I correct in thinking that I can’t transfer the domain from where I licensed it (Google) so that the name redirects to the WordPress.com site?
You cannot transfer a domain registration to us from another provider. You can point the domain here via a process called domain mapping (which is not the same as redirecting it). All of our plans include one free domain or domain mapping upgrade.
Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)
2. Do any of the premium WordPress plans include email? I’m attempting to run a new nonprofit organization and need the email accounts.
We do not provide email hosting, but you can connect any hosted email account to your domain by adding the required DNS records.
We do offer email forwarding if you have a domain hosted here, but it’s limited – depending on the email address you forward to you might not be able to send emails from that address, only receive.
I’m also unsure about the hosting, I read about needing to find a host with Bluehost most recommended. Isn’t hosting included in the premium plans?
Hosting refers to whose servers your site is installed on. If you have a WordPress.com site, we are your hosting provider. On WordPress.com hosting is free, with unlimited bandwidth, unlimited memory for content, and 3GB free storage for media files. The plans don’t pay for hosting, only for additional features, like connecting a domain, extra media storage, etc.
If you pay a provider like Bluehost for hosting, then you’re using the open source WordPress.org software instead. There you’d have your own installation of WordPress running on a server, and you have full control right down to the source code. There your bandwidth, storage space, support, as well as services like backups and security, depend on the hosting plan you choose.
