Expired Domain / Recovery support
-
I recently found out my domain was expired because my card on file was no longer active. The notifications were sent to an email I forgot was linked to the site so I had no idea this was happening since I was on an autopay. At this point I am not sure if I can get my site back since it’s over a month expired.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi emic28,
spokenviews.org expired on 2017-03-08 and is currently in the redemption period:
The good news is that you can still try to recover the domain. An $80 redemption fee will be added to the regular domain renewal cost of $18.
If you agree to these costs I can generate a payment request for the amount. Once that has been paid, we can start the process of trying to get your domain back. Should the recovery fail after you’ve paid the redemption fee, that fee is refunded in full.
If you do not want to pay the fee, you can wait until the domain is released but you may not be able to get it back if it is purchased at auction during this time.
Please let me know what you would like to do as soon as you can.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info,
What exactly is an auction? Is there a time when I can repurchase it, if so what would be the cost in the case I can grab it up again?

Hi emic28,
What exactly is an auction?
When a domain is not renewed by the registrant, it is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Expired domains can be included in auctions but they don’t always get purchased. We don’t recommend using this method to get your domain back as it can be costly and risky.
If you want to pay the redemption fee and domain cost I can start the recovery process for you.

OKay, that’s fine, please let me know what you need from me. I did update the card on my account so it can be charged to that.

Hi emic28,
I’ve sent a payment request to the email address on your account — $80 for the redemption fee and $18 for the domain cost. Please let me know if you don’t receive it.
Once that has been paid I will start the recovery process by contacting our domain registrar.

Thanks for your payment. I’ve contacted our domain registrar and will let you know when I have an update — we usually hear back in 1-2 business days.
Speak to you soon.

Hi emic28,
Good news! I was able to recover spokenviews.org and it is now active on your account :)

This is what I was afraid of. The domain is saved but I had built a site that doesn’t look like this. I followed a tutorial from a youtube video and got it looking pretty nice, the current spokenviews.org that is coming up is definitly not the one I had previously desgiened. I was using hostgator for something, not sure what happened to my redesigned site. I also was logging into WP with another user name but it somehow accessed spokenviews.org.

I did contact Hostgator, although I didn’t get the problem fixed, I do understand somewhat what happened. I guess I went through the tutorial online and at one point I connected the already paid for spokenviews.org domain to the hostgator server and used a different WP login to edit my site. The issue at this point is, I now have spokenviews.org for another year BUT the site I redesigned is no longer available since the domain expired.
I am not sure if there’s any possibility of recovering that site at this point. It was accessible through spokenviews.org but I no longer can login under the other WP admin that I used to edit that site. emic28 is the admin from the old site that is currently up.
Not sure if that makes sense.

The name servers for your domain are currently pointing to WordPress.com, but they can be pointed to your HostGator site instead. You can add HostGator’s name servers using these steps:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/
Once the name servers have been updated, you should see your HostGator site again. Bear in mind it can take up to 48 hours for name server changes to fully take effect so you may not see the other site straight away.

Providing your hosting hasn’t expired, the files will still be available on your host’s servers. The domain may need to be reconnect on your host’s end, so you may want to speak to them and find out if this is the case.
Come back to me if you have any problems.
