Expired plan and expiring domain…?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can no longer afford to pay for hosting or domain etc. so I’ve cancelled these things. My domain is through Bluehost and I had a paid plan on WordPress until I cancelled it. My question is this… what happens when my domain expires? I’d like to keep my site going but with a free plan. Does it revert back to http://www.slsartistry.wordpress.com or does it just vanish into the darkness of the world wide web? If I look under ‘my sites’ I still have my original slsartistry.wordpress.com but I also have my current one with the paid domain http://www.slsartistry.com. I’ve already backed up most of my current site onto the old one, just in case it should disappear when my domain expires.

My second question is regarding Patreon… I have a Patreon account and recently linked my WordPress and Patreon with a plugin. Patreon says that this feature is free. On my paid for domain account I am able to use the plugin but if I go to my old free account it says I need a paid account to access plugins. Am I wasting my time setting this feature up? When my domain expires, will I lose this Patreon feature on WordPress as well?

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hi there,

what happens when my domain expires? I’d like to keep my site going but with a free plan. Does it revert back to http://www.slsartistry.wordpress.com or does it just vanish into the darkness of the world wide web?

slsartistry.com and slsartistry.wordpress.com are two different sites that are hosted at two different places (Bluehost and WordPress.com respectively). You do not have any history of an upgrade or plan with WordPress.com – just the free site slsartistry.wordpress.com. If you let slsartistry.com expire, the content on that site will no longer be available unless you export it from Bluehost over to your WordPress.com site.

Am I wasting my time setting this feature up?

If you are moving your site over from Bluehost to WordPress.com, then yes, most likely. Plugins can only be installed on a WordPress.com site with the Business Plan: http://wordpress.com/plans

So, unless you are wanting to purchase that plan, than the particular plugin you were using on your self-hosted site is not going to be available on your WordPress.com site.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
