export error: PCDATA invalid Char value 8

I was trying to export all my self hosted blog content through wp-admin, but the xml file was corrupted/incomplete. When I opened the exported file, it showed me a rendering of the page up to the first error. I then tried to export my database trough PhpMyAdmin (cpanel) but I’ve got the same error. Is there some way to fix it so I can export all my posts and import it to a wordpress.com blog? BTW, I can’t access my wp-admin at the moment, as I am having issues with my host, so if someone could guide me through the process on the cpanel I would really appreciate. Thanks heaps!

  • Hi @ericapalm, sometimes we’ll see errors like this if some spammer tried to sneak code into one of their comments.

Can you get rid of all spammy comments, then try exporting again? You would need to use wp-admin, by the way; if you create a SQL dump you’ll need to import it into a local installation before exporting again, which can be messy.

I also recommend getting in touch with the host to see if there’s an issue on their server.

Hi supernovia, thanks for you help, I really appreciate that.

After many tentatives, I was able to fix it. It was actually a html structure problem in some posts that were corrupting the export file. I had to copy the posts content into a html translator and paste them back. I had this done to a few posts, but in the end I was able to export a fine xml file.

    Thanks again!

  • Oh good! I’m glad you were able to sort it out. Enjoy your weekend!
