Export of comments failed

Hello, I am using the export feature to export comments. I receive the .xls file and can import the comments into a fresh installation – but there are older comments missing – those that are older than 2013.
I can not select a date range when exporting ‘all’ or just ‘comments’ – so I expect the full range since June 2011 to be exported – but this just doesn’t happen.
Any idea what is wrong here?

Hi Chris,
It’s not possible to only export the comments. Comments are attached to posts and pages and they cannot be separately exported.
If you’re looking to export your posts of a certain period you can do so if you go to My Site > Settings > Export. Here’s a direct link to that page:

thank you for your quick response!
I did use the recommended export feature and selected ALL … I could import everything. Pages, Posts and media. When comparing the results, I found out, that comments were missing in the date range from 2011-2013 … even though the pages and posts are correct.Any idea?

Hi @chrisahrweiler, can you send a link to the site where you’re importing? If it’s hosted here with us, we can take a look.
If it isn’t hosted here, my guess is that the importer is timing out before the comments are imported. If simply running it again doesn’t fix things, you could try deleting (and removing from the trash) posts that are missing comments, then try importing again.

the link is: http://yogastern.com/It’s not the timeout. I had problems with the timeout but fixed it. Now the import runs through. I have 1116 approved comments but when I imported there were only 800 something … When I compared the number of posts, there were a lot of posts in the trash, even though there are none in http://yogastern.com/. I recovered all those posts in the trash to be regular posts and that also brought the comments back. Very strange. Now there are only 35 comments missing. Can they be attached to other objects like sides or anything, so that I could possibly recover them too?

Hi Chris,
It’s possible those comments may have been left directly on media files, specifically on the image attachment pages that WordPress automatically creates when you insert an image into a post or page.
If the images on which those comments were made do not exist on the new site, the comments won’t appear, as there won’t be any page for them to display on, same as imported comments that you imported to a deleted post.

The media files were fully imported. No count difference there. Will comments persist, even when the related media files were deleted on the original site?

If the media files were deleted, any comment on them would have been deleted as well, same as when you delete a post or a page.
The only explanation is that there is a post or posts that did not make the transition to the new site. Without access to your new site’s dashboard it’s not possible for us to investigate any further from this end, though.

We don’t log into third party accounts to provide support, so I won’t be able to help with that.
You can try asking in the self-hosted WordPress forums if they have any idea – the users there have more experience with the importer you’re using on your new site, so they might be able to offer some new ideas.
