Trying to export my wordpress.com blog to hosting site but continue to get error message. Need a WXR file. How do I get this?

Hi there,
Where exactly are you getting an error? When you try to export on our end? Your site’s logs show that you’ve been able to successfully export your site several times already.
If the error is on the site where you’re trying to import, check if the file you’re trying to use ends in .zip or .xml. If it ends in .zip, you first need to extract the zip folder, and that will give you the file you need to import.

Thank you for your quick response. I was having trouble unzipping. Now it is unzipped and everything says it is ready for launch, but nothing transferred over. None of my writing, no images. Now what do I do? I really hate to recreate my entire blog site. Thanks for any help.

If the file won’t import properly on the self-hosted site, you might need to change the memory limit on your site – the file might be too big to upload on their end. This is something your hosting provider will need to help you with, as we don’t have any access to your self-hosted site or your hosting provider’s servers.
You can also ask in the self-hosted forums if the users there know of any other reasons why the import might fail. The self-hosted WordPress importer does not work the same as the importer here on WordPress.com, so our ability to help you troubleshoot this is very limited.

The issue is the file that continues to export is an XML file. I need a PHP file. I’ve unzipped the export 5 times and it continues to be a XML file. How can I get a PHP file from WordPress?

You can’t export a PHP file from WordPress.com. You can only export your content, i.e. posts, pages and comments, via an .xml export file. You said in your first post you need a WXR file. That’s the file that ends in the .xml extension.
That file can be imported under Tools ->Import in the WP-Admin dashboard of your self-hosted site. You cannot upload it via FTP.
