exporting blog from wordpress.com to dreamhost

I’m trying to move my wordpress.com blog to my own domain on dreamhost, but the “one-click” migration seems to be a myth. I exported by blog, I hit the “export” on my wordpress blog, then told dreamhost to import that file, but this is the message they emailed me instead: “Unfortunately it appears your old host’s panel does not have a
backup feature enabled or is not a cPanel so we won’t be able to migrate
your data over. Please contact them to enable this feature on
their panel and then try your migrate again by clicking the export
    button here:
    https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=home.migrator”
So, how do I get this feature enabled? Or, is there a step-by-step process you could direct me to?
Thanks in advance for any help – I’m baffled …

    Apples and oranges.

If you Export then you must Import and the Import needs to be done from inside your WordPress program not Dreamhost or cPanel. sounds like the “one click” was expecting a database file –

Try going into your WordPress Dashboard and the Import is in the same area as the Export is that you already did to produce an xml file.

Thanks for the help – I had been following the instructions in that support link, but hadn’t understood about needing to import in wordpress. So, I just did that and got the following response: “We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed.”
When they email me that it’s done, I should then do the “export” thing again, import that to dreamhost, and maybe it will work?
I’ve got my fingers crossed …

Yes you have to sign into the new blog dashboard and go to tools > import. Since wordpress does not automatically install the import scripts any longer, you will have to use the installer to get the script, but it takes only moments to install it and then as long as there aren’t a bunch of errors in the original blog that were exported with your data, the import should go smoothly. Sometimes XHTML errors in posts or pages can mess things up.
