Exporting wordpress.com site to import on wordpress.org – Blog not exporting/importing fully

I am trying to export my wordpress.com site (canoecrew.wordpress.com) and import it into a wordpress.org site. My exported files are extremely small and missing content.
I purchased the domain name thehappyadventure.com from GoDaddy last year. I was using a Personal wordpress.com plan to connect the domain to my blog, but I wanted more customization options and a proper wordpress.org site. I transferred my domain from GoDaddy to Bluehost and cancelled my Personal plan and unlinked the blog from my purchased domain name.
I exported the blog before and after disconnecting from the domain but the exported file, once unzipped, is only 2.3MB. As I have 31 posts, 2 pages and hundreds of media files on my blog I doubt that’s possible. I’ve done a full website copy and the files are 1.5GB!
I’ve tried to import the .xml file using the WordPress importer on the .org site but it will either import only one page and one post or it gives me an error message saying ‘Page ‘About’ already exists.’ I’ll delete the page, try again, and the same thing happens.

I’ve also installed wordpress locally on my Mac using MAMP. I attempted to import my .xml file into this new local host without any connection to my new Bluehost-ed domain name and it has partially imported. I can view it at the localhost I created as a trial run. In this instance, 23 blog posts and 1 page were imported.

Why am I unable to export and then import a FULL copy of my blog? Why am I able to import more of the blog using the localhost and not the Bluehost WordPress client/wordpress.org admin?

Until I can successfully transfer my blog contents to the .org site my domain name will show a coming soon badge, which is really upsetting because I’ve linked all of my accounts to that domain to direct people to my blog.

Am I going to have to manually restructure my entire website and create each post individually all over again?

    Please help!

    Hi tierneytearknee,

I exported the blog before and after disconnecting from the domain but the exported file, once unzipped, is only 2.3MB.

Your .xml export file contains the text content of posts, pages and categories but it does not contain the media files themselves, which is why there is a size difference between the .xml file and your media library.

During the export process, links to your media files on WordPress.com will be created — and your WordPress.org site will use these to import your media. For this reason, we recommend keeping your existing site online until the import has completed on your new site.

I exported an .xml file from canoecrew.wordpress.com and imported it onto a test site. All of your posts, pages and media imported successfully, so all of the data is there and being exported.

Can you try emptying the spam comments from your WordPress.com site and running the export again?

Let me know how you get on.

    Hi gemmacevans,

I deleted all spam comments from the wordpress.com site and exported again.

This time when I imported the .xml, the only post that imported was “Intro,” my very first post ever.

I tried importing again and only one more post transferred.

    Hi tierneytearknee,

Okay, thanks for trying again. Your site is not hosted on WordPress.com servers so we are unable to troubleshoot what is happening at that end.

However, I had one last thought. If your host or connection times out while importing, some of your content may not be imported. You could try exporting smaller parts of your content and see if that helps — we have a screenshot of the options available here:

    Export Your Website’s Content

If that doesn’t work, I recommend posting to the WordPress.org forums for advice:

I found a few topics about incomplete imports on WordPress.org sites:
