extra images uploading to server

  It seems the trick to prevent extra images from uploading to the server no longer works. On upload, WordPress adds six iterations of the image file in different sizes to the uploads folder. Setting image sizes to 0 at Settings > Media used to prevent this. Now it does not appear to work. My websites are becoming bloated with unused/extra files on the server.
