Folder download glitch
-
Hello hope all is well. I noticed something weird in my download folder stats. When I edit my blog post and view the blog post my folder download stats rise. However, I do not think any one is downloading them. I think it’s counting me even though I am not downloading them every time I edit the blog post and view the blog post. It consistently does this again and again. Is there a way to fix this? I don’t want my stats to be glitching like this. Thanks so much

Hi there, can you share the address of your WPcom website. If your site is marked Private, your own visits will be counted. However, on a Public site, your visits are excluded and shouldn’t increase when you preview your site. Is it only the download stats that change?
I’ve flagged this thread for staff attention as well. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Hi there!
Could you confirm the address of the site and the page/post in question? We’ll have a look.
-
yes, it is
https://josephallenmusic.wordpress.com/It is only doing it on my blog page and yes only the downloads are changing. To my knowledge it is public.

As far as I know I’m using the block folder provided by wordpress. So it should be a downloadable link if I’m not mistaken.

No sir, that whats weird. I am not clicking on them and my stats keep counting downloads. Sometimes 3 at a time for each of the documents on the blog post.
-
This is something I’ve noticed. It’s the only time it does it. If I edit the blog post and then click view it, which I normally do just to make sure it looks right, it will count downloads even though I do not click on them.

I just want my stats to be right. If you all can’t fix the problem is there a way to fix my stats and take the ones off that were counted as me with this glitch? -
Can you give a link to the specific post where this is happening?
And are you viewing the post using an incognito window/logged out, or while still logged into your account?
-
Yes sir,
https://josephallenmusic.wordpress.com/2020/09/07/10000-reasons/Truthfully though it is happening on like all of my blog posts. This is the one I noticed it with.
I am logged in while this is happening.
-
Okay, I viewed that post, and another post on your site, both as your account, and completely logged out.
Viewing the posts as your account, no views were recorded, which is how it should work, and downloads were only recorded when clicking on the Download link for a file.
Viewing the posts logged out, views were recorded as expected, but downloads were also only recorded when clicking on the Download link.
At no point was a download recorded automatically, without me clicking on one of the files.
So the problem here is not with your site or the stats page. It’s possible this could just be a coincidence, that someone regularly happens to download files at the same time you’re viewing your posts, but looking at your overall traffic this seems unlikely.
Another possibility is that a browser add-on or setting is causing your browser to automatically download linked files in the background when you open a site, likely just to the cache to enable the file opening more quickly if/when you do click on it.
To test this, can you check if the same thing happens if you use a different browser? Try to use a completely fresh installation, e.g. if you currently use Firefox, download and install Chrome, Brave or Opera, and see if the same thing happens if you log in with that browser.
-
Ok I used a different browser and the same thing has happened. It does keep downloading them. If this is the case where would this setting be so I can turn off this automatic download?

Hi there,
There isn’t a setting to disable automatic download since the file shouldn’t be downloading and reflecting in your stats just by updating the page. You mention it is only happening when you edit and update the post where the links are. Are you editing the links in any way during the post edit?
-
No sir I am not updating the links. I’ll record myself and send a link from YouTube so you all can see how and what it is exactly doing. maybe that will help.
-
I upgraded my site to the business plan and I can no longer even see how many times the files are being downloaded. There is like no stat box or analytic to even see this info. Is this normal when you upgrade? Do you need a plugin once you upgrade your site?
-
If you install plugins under the Business Plan it changes a number of things to how your site works behind the scenes, and I’m afraid I don’t know if/how that would affect your download stats.
As you now have access to it, I’d recommend you contact live chat support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact to troubleshoot this further at this point. Our chat support team has more experience with the ways a Business Plan site works differently from a regular WordPress.com site.
