follow a private wordpress site

  I can’t figure out how to do this; on wordpress.com I get a ‘Sorry something has happened and can’t follow this site’ so can’t I follow a non-public wordpress blog?

  You can ask the owner of a site to follow his or her site. “Remember, it’s up to the site owner to decide who can and cannot have access. Requesting access means that you are simply asking the site owner to consider adding you as a viewer.”

  but I *am* the owner? I get an error, as mentioned before, trying to follow a private site on wordpress.com: “Sorry, there was an error following ‘xxxx.xxx’. ” Clickpath was:

  • log in to wordpress.com
  • click Reader
  • enter URL of private blog
  • click link below to follow
  • 10 seconds later unauthenticated attempt fails with above error

  Any wordpress site admins help with this? I use the same email address to log in to my wordpress site as the one I use for wordpress.com. Using My Private Site Plugin to avoid spammers.

  We can’t help you as your are obviously talking about a site using the open source wordpress.org; you can’t use plugins on a free wordpress.com website.
  It seems that plugin – https://wordpress.org/plugins/jonradio-private-site/ – has been abandonned, “This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.”

  Is there a supported alternative to “My Private Site” or am I destined to be constantly battling trolls and spammers, thus I need to look elsewhere for a “totally private Twitter”? Perhaps not being able to add my blog site to wordpress.com isn’t such a poor alternative. Thank you @startmees for the replies, and sorry if I didn’t phrase it correctly.

  Note I did try to use WordPress’ innate privacy settings: How to Make Your WordPress Site Private but all I see on my hosted site is a link to edit the Privacy Policy settings. Is that an artifact of the “Open Source” WP I am stuck with?
