Follow blog via email widget send duplicate emails

  I’m using the ‘Follow Blog via email’ widget and each time someone follows my blog I receive two emails that are exactly the same. The email subject is ‘[Person A] is now following [blog name]’ The emails are exact duplicates.

  What can I fix this so I only receive one email instead of two copies?

  Can you please let me know if the sender’s email address is the same in both emails?

  Yes the email addresses are the same for both sender and recepient.

  Hi @fosterfotos, I took a look at the subscription emails and checked on the ones that are coming in multiple times.

  It looks like those users are actually unfollowing and re-following the site, repeatedly, and that’s why you’re getting multiple notifications.

  Are you using any test accounts to follow the site?

  Yes, I’ve used a test account to follow the site and I have unfollowed the test site as I’ve tried various settings in an attempt to debug the issue. However, that is not the problem.

  Each time another person (not my test site) follows my main site (fosterfotos), I simultaneousy receive duplicate email indicating they have followed my site. This has happened for all 18 of my followers.

  Also, I am part of a photo group that members are using their own free wordpress.com sites. We have heard from many of them saying they also are receiving duplicate emails when someone follows their site. We are all using the “Follow Blog via Email” widget and the TwentyTwelve theme.

  To clarify, many in the group are using TwentyTwelve theme, but not everyone.

  Also, I just tested the TwentySixteen theme on fosterfotos and am still receiving duplicate emails notifications.

  I checked several of the recent duplicates and they were also following / unfollowing / re-following, so they also seemed like tests.

  Would you all be willing to stop tests for a few days so we can get logs of real followers who are coming through as duplicates, without all of the extra tests generating noise?

  And, if the others are willing to participate in this thread, could you ask them to do the same, and comment here as well if they continue to get duplicates? We can then check on their accounts, too.
