Several people have said in person that they follow my blog but don’t show up in the list of followers I can access. Is there any way they’re following without being recorded?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, on the Stats page, click on Insights and you will see a Followers section there. You can click on the numbers beside WordPress.com or Email to see a listing of the followers in thos categories. WordPress.com would be a listing of those that have followed you in the WordPress.com Reader. The email followers are those that opted to get email notifications of your posts, rather than through the Reader.
Have you checked both of those lists for the people? Do you also do Facebook and/or Twitter? Could it be they are following you there? Typically if they are following you via Facebook and Twitter though, they will show up in a separate section.

If you could check with a couple of those people and find out how they followed you, I can look into this further.

I have checked both lists and they don’t show up in either. I don’t use twitter and I’m not connected to these people on facebook in any way. They report having both signed up to follow the blog and confirmed their subscription by email, at least some doing so on smartphones. Is there any way to get a report or record of all email addresses that have attempted to subscribe? I’m quite sure they’re not all showing up in any way I can access.

We don’t have a report for attempted subscriptions, but we could double check the addresses for if you’d like.
You’ll want to share them here as a plain email address (don’t add spaces, etc.) so that our forum software will hide them from the public.

Sure, two of them are (email visible only to moderators and staff) and (email visible only to moderators and staff) — these folks report having subscribed and getting email notifications of new posts, but don’t show up in either of the blog stats lists (followers or email followers), or when I download a CSV of email followers.
There are others as well, but could we test with these two first?

The maryjo… email is connected to a WordPress.com account, and I see the username for that account showing in your followers list at https://wordpress.com/people/followers/speckonaspeck.wordpress.com. For followers with a WordPress.com account we don’t reveal the email address even if they subscribe to email notifications, and for security reasons I cannot tell you what that username is. But they are definitely showing in your followers list.
The anhow… email address is not connected to a WordPress.com account and also not currently subscribed to your site. I don’t see any pending email subscriptions for your site for that email either, and we did not send them any email notifications for the most recent posts published on your site on 6 and 17 August. If the owner of that email is following your site, they’re using a different email address to do so.
