fontawesome icons

I’m using the theme DermaCare and they have a prebuilt service section on the main page that shows an icon a some text. When I edit a page there’s an ‘icon’ section under the featured image, with a link to the Icon Library, which opens the fontawesome cheatsheet. Any correct code i enter diplays as an empty box. Example code [fa-user-md]. Now Ive tried to troubleshoot, so i got the fontawesome plugin and tried the CDN and the KIT options and both dont change the empty box.
any help would be amazing! i feel like i would have to trash the site if i dont figure it out because theres empty areas for icons and it doesnt look good.
