Footer 2 and footer 3 widgets on my home page have disappeared from the customizer.

I was in the customizer, editing and removing the footer 1 widget I had installed. When I deleted the widget – footer 2 and 3 widget areas disappeared. Footer 1 widget area is still available there though. However – if I access the widgets through the dashboard, footer 2 and 3 are there. When I go back to visit site they are not there, nor are they available in the customizer area. Any ideas on what I did to delete them? And – how do I get them to show again.
