Forum Plug-In for WordPress.com

Does WordPress.com allow a forum plug-in? WPBeginner seemed to say that this would only be available on the self-hosted WordPress.org

Hi there, the only sites that can install plug-ins on wordpress.com are those on the business upgrade plan. For everyone else, you can set up a free forum hosted elsewhere and then link to it from your website.
Another possible option is to start an additional site here on wordpressdotcom and use the P2 theme. More about that here https://wordpress.com/theme/p2-breathe
Again you can link your new site from the existing one.

Thanks @justjennifer for super-fast response. I had assumed (and hoped) that all plug-ins could be used with the Business plan but the WPBeginner comment worried me. I don’t know about the P2 theme and will follow it up.

Hello again, you’re welcome! Keep in mind that sites like WPBeginner usually target users of the open-source WordPress (org) software unless they explicitly say the information is also for sites using the WordPressdotcom platform, where we are .
You can find relevant information about using your WordPressdotcom website in our Support site at https://en.support.wordpress.com/ The search feature also brings up forum replies. :)

Thanks @justjennifer, I am mainly focusing on the WordPress.com, Business package. Its sticker-price is not outrageous

Of the many thousands of plugins available for WordPress, this is a short list of plugins that are incompatible with the WordPressdotcom platform and so would not be available on the Business plan: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incompatible-plugins/
