I should clarify that I’m moving from a self-hosted blog and due to pricing issues do not think I want to continue with the self hosting option. I want to see if others have done this and what their experiences were moving to a free plan with wordpress.com

You do not pay for hosting on WordPress.com, and all sites on WordPress.com have unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited storage for the site itself, automatic software and server updates, security, backups and spam protection. The free plan also comes with 3GB of space for media files.
It is not possible to use plugins or custom themes on the free plan, and to connect your own domain will require one of our paid plans.
