friends to read private blog

Hi there,
I am new to wordpress and tried to get an answer via FAQ and searching the forum but I might just be too thick.
My question is:
I have set my blog to private blog. Posted some test entries. Now I want to invite family / friends to read my blog. I sent an invite to one of my other email addresses to test this (i selected “add user to blogroll but not the box “contributor” as onle want them to read my blog) . I sign up for just a username as my friends would do. Now i go to my blog an get the “you need to log in to view this…” I type just generated fake friend username and password and then i am directed to a dashboard site but not to my blog. How can i get my friends to view my private blog?

Ok, I just got one step closer. I added the newly generated user (fake friend) in the privacy settings as a user. Now this user can access the blog. OK, but thats kind of a complicated process. That means my friends need to sign up and then need to email me their username so I can add them? Or am I simply not getting it? Any help appreciated
