From mapping to transferring a domain

  I bought a new domain today and your service notification says I can transfer it to WordPress after January 16. If I map it today, can I switch to transferring it on Jan 16? If yes, is there a downside to this procedure? Should I wait and do everything in January or should I start today?

  Nope. None at all.

  Should I wait and do everything in January or should I start today?

  I would just set up Domain Mapping today and then transfer if you still wish to do so when January rolls around.
