  How can I sign up for WordPress and build a site behind the scenes while my old site is still functioning? It doesn’t seem to let me begin without creating a new domain. I want to eventually use my old one, but need time to create the new website

  Yes, you can do this. Go ahead and set up a site with one of our free addresses. If you like it, then you can connect the domain.

  Go to My Sites – + Add new WordPress site – and register a free address. Those are the ones that end with .wordpress.com.

  Set the site to private, that hides it from the internet. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  Build the site. Here are some tips to help you get started and familiar with WordPress.com:
