Go Daddy to WordPress transfers

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a domain name at go daddy that is mapped to my basic/free wordpress account but browsers give a security warning and won’t show the page. I am therefore thinking of transfering the domain name to word press but I want to find out how much it will cost first as I’m assuming I will have to start a paid package in order to properly make the transfer.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello –

I don’t see any domains mapped to WordPress.com from this user account.

What is your domain in question?

It’s samthemusicman.co.uk and because it’s a co.uk it can’t be transferred, only mapped it seems. I changed some of the settings at Go Daddy to help point the address to my wordpress page but it still doesn’t seem to work and firefox says the site poses a security threat. (maybe it’ll settle in a day or two)

So I quickly then considered getting hosting space to remove ads etc but the co.uk address has now meant WordPress’s lowest price plan for this is £7 a month rather than £4.

More information than you need, sorry :)

  • Hi there,

It’s not possible to map a domain to a free site, and samthemusicman.co.uk is not mapped to any site on WordPress.com. That domain’s name servers are pointed to WordPress.com, but in order for it to be mapped here and show the WordPress.com site requires a paid plan and domain mapping upgrade on the WordPress.com site:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

If the domain loaded your site previously, it’s because GoDaddy was loading your site in an iframe on a different site on their servers, through a process called domain masking. This gives the appearance of the domain being mapped here, but it’s done without any actual connection existing between the domain and the site, is not the same as having the domain properly mapped to us, and can cause various problems, including but not limited to, the security warnings you’ve been seeing.

So I quickly then considered getting hosting space to remove ads etc but the co.uk address has now meant WordPress’s lowest price plan for this is £7 a month rather than £4.

Whether you transfer your domain or map it has no influence on the cost of the plan you need. You can map your domain with any plan, including the cheapest, the Personal Plan.
