GoDaddy or WordPress?
-
Hi
I have a domain name registered with GoDaddy. I used their free website builder and thought it was all ok. Now the work has all gone as I had to pay a monthly fee which I didn’t understand at the time. I was out of contact for a while. I get the option to use WordPress through their site but they will charge me £6.99. I only need a very basic website – splash page and a gallery or two. Should I transfer my site here to wordpress? What’s the pros and cons? Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
First, if you move your site to us on WordPress.com, it will always stay online. We have a free plan that never expires, so your content is never taken offline because you did not renew an upgrade.
That said, to use your own domain you will need one of our paid plans. Then you can either transfer the domain to us, or you can just connect it here while leaving it registered with GoDaddy.
Should you not renew your plan in future the domain will stop working, but your site would still be accessible at the free WordPress.com URL we provide.
Also note that we’re something different from the WordPress you’d be using at GoDaddy. The WordPress option they have is hosting for the open source WordPress software made on WordPress.org, and in terms of hosting that would work the same as what you had with GoDaddy’s own website builder – if you were to stop paying for your hosting plan, your site would go offline. That’s just how traditional web hosting works, and has nothing to do with WordPress itself, which is essentially just a piece of free software.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
