Going self-hosted, need to migrate subscribers

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

We are moving alignment.wordpress.com to a new self-hosted environment under jonathanbecher.com. Jetpack is active, requesting migration of Subscribers (and Likes, if possible?).

    Thanks!

    Hi,

We have the same problem. Just transferred our blog ww.lineadifrotniera.wordpress.com to e new self hosted solution – http://www.lineadifrontiera.com. Jetpack is active and connected.
We would like to take with us our subscribes and stats to the new site.
    Could you help us?

    Thanks,
    Lorenzo

Dan, I don’t see the Jetpack blog in your account. Can you please make sure that it is both activated and connected to your WordPress.com account? You can do that from the Jetpack section of your self-hosted site’s dashboard.

Lorenzo, I transferred your followers and stats to your new blog at lineadifrontiera.com, as requested.

Your email followers will continue to receive email updates, and your WordPress.com followers will continue to see your new posts in the Reader. If your WordPress.com followers would like to receive email updates, as well, they can subscribe via email on your new blog.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

    Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your reply. Jetpack is installed on http://jonathanbecher.com and shows “connected to WordPress.com”.

We have not yet begun redirecting traffic from alignment.wordpress.com to the new self-hosted site, is that a prerequisite for migrating our subscribers?

    Dan

Hi Dan, no, you don’t need to begin redirecting traffic as a prerequisite. You are welcome to begin directing visitors to your new site whenever you are ready. :)

However, I checked our records, and Jetpack is linking your site http://jonathanbecher.com to a different WordPress.com account (not dancrielsap). Can you please log in to that account and then reply here to confirm that you want the subscribers from alignment.wordpress.com transferred to your self-hosted site? Thanks!

Ok that should be fixed now…. I thought I had activated Jetpack with the correct account, but apparently not. Thanks for your help.

Hi Dan, excellent! I started migrating your subscribers to your self-hosted site. Given the large number of subscribers you have, it may take a bit for this process to finish. Please let me know if you have any concerns about that.

Also, I know I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but I want to reiterate that your email followers will continue to receive email updates from your new site, and your WordPress.com followers will continue to see your new posts in the Reader. If your WordPress.com followers would like to receive email updates, as well, they can subscribe via email on your new blog.

In your original post you also mentioned Likes. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to transfer Likes between sites. Please let me know if I can help with anything else!

    Hi Rachel,

Thank you for your help. Now I have my subscribers and stats with me and all is working perfect.
    Bests,

    Hi Rachel,

Thanks so much for getting the migration process started for us!

I do have a question about the process though — I see 8926 subscribers when I visit alignment.wordpress.com (via the sidebar widget) and the same widget on jonathanbecher.com shows only 5689 subscribers.

Where are the other 3237 subscribers? Is the import process still running after 3 days? Or perhaps did something go wrong?

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

Your WordPress.com and email subscribers are no longer linked to alignment.wordpress.com — they were all successfully transferred to jonathanbecher.com. I want to assure you that you aren’t missing any of those followers.

The sidebar widget at alignment.wordpress.com also shows your social media followers. Since you have Publicize set up with Twitter there, all of your Twitter followers are counted in that widget. That’s where the nearly 9,000 followers shown in that widget are coming from.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks for your reply Rachel. I think there may have been an issue with the import however.

Suddenly the subscriber count on our new domain has fallen to 4,663… it was 5,689 at the time I wrote my last message… what could have happened? I really appreciate all your help so far, would you be able to check and see why nearly 1,000 subscribers just disappeared overnight?

Also, regarding Twitter subscribers, will those subscribers show up if I link up with Twitter from the new blog’s Publicize settings page?

    Hi Dan,

According to our records, your old site had 4,662 subscribers that were successfully transferred to jonathanbecher.com. We have had some glitches in the past few days where an incorrect number of subscribers were being displayed for some sites (more information here) which may account for the variation you saw.

If you already had subscribers at jonathanbecher.com before we transferred your other subscribers over, and you think those subscribers are now missing, please let me know and I can have our team investigate that further.

Also, regarding Twitter subscribers, will those subscribers show up if I link up with Twitter from the new blog’s Publicize settings page?

Currently, the Jetpack widget for your self-hosted site will only show email and WordPress.com followers, not social media followers. I still recommend setting up Publicize to keep your Twitter followers in the loop, but those followers will not be counted in the widget. That is a feature we’re keeping in mind for future updates to Jetpack, though!

Thanks for all your help Rachel. I have extended the widget on our site to count Twitter followers in addition to wordpress.com subscribers. If you would be interested in seeing my code to add to a future version of JetPack I would be glad to share it. Please let me know.

    Best regards,
    Dan

Hi Dan, that’s really cool, and thanks for the offer! You can actually contribute directly to Jetpack if you’d like — there’s more information about how to contribute here:

    Cheers!

    Hi again Rachel,

We experienced some delay in preparing to redirect traffic from alignment.wordpress.com to our new site at jonathanbecher.com, and during that time a handful of new subscribers have appeared on the wordpress.com site.

Can we please do a second, and final migration from alignment.wordpress.com to jonathanbecher.com so that these subscribers are not lost before we begin redirecting all traffic to the new self-hosted blog?

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

    Dan

Sure thing, Dan! I started the process to transfer that last bunch of subscribers over to jonathanbecher.com. Those subscribers should appear there soon.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else. :)

    Thanks again! Much appreciated.
