Goodreads widget not working
-
I have added the Goodreads Widget, but when I add my numeric ID it keeps saying that it is invalid. What am I doing wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you an author in Goodreads? If so, the process is a tiny bit different: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/goodreads-widget/#for-goodreads-authors

Hi there,
I was able to make it work. Please make sure to only include the numerical ID (40209449) not the whole link nor your ID with the username (40209449-melissa).
-
I only used the number. I’ve tried it multiple times, on multiple computers, with multiple browsers. I still get the message that says the user ID is invalid and to reenter.

That is rather odd, I can also get it to work on my end. I wonder if something in the browser is getting in the way.
First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

I use Firefox on my home PC and it updated this morning to 68. I tried it again, still did not work. I cleared my cache and cookies, still not working. I restarted with all extensions and add-ons disabled, still says invalid.
I updated Chrome on my home PC to 75.0.3770.142 and tried it there, still get the invalid message.
I tried this on two different work PCs with Chrome (that is our standard), I did not get a chance to check before I left work yesterday to see if it is up to date, but if it’s not, Libraries IT will not allow us to update.
Any other ideas why I still get the invalid message?

Hmm, it’s not working on my end either which makes me wonder if it is an intermittent issue since my colleagues could get it to work. What shelf option do you have it on in the widget?
I’ll look further into this for you.
Thanks,
-
I had it selected for currently reading, but I tried different ones to no avail.
Thank you.

Howdy –
Similar to darnelldibbles I am unable to get the ID to save. You are the second report I have seen this week, so there may be something else at play here. I will report back.
-
Do you have any Chrome browser extensions enabled? Try disabling those to see if it makes a difference.
-
I’ve only ever used Chrome the one time on my home PC to test if it would work there. I typically use Firefox.
-
@minavilly thanks for that. I also was able to duplicate it on my end, and now I think I *might* see the cause. We’ll check in with our developers to confirm. I can’t promise any quick fixes, but we can update you here when we hear back.
-
Oh, one quick question too: can you ensure you’re logged into Goodreads when you try to connect it?
Try visiting https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/40209449/ and let us know whether that stays at that address, or whether it changes.
If you’ve just logged in and that address isn’t changing on you to include your username and what not, then please go ahead and try once more to add your ID. Go ahead and save the changes to the widget, too, even if the error still shows.
We’ll go from there.
-
Just curious to hear whether logging into Goodreads first helped at all. If possible, remove the widget completely first, publish the changes.
Then, making sure you’re logged into Goodreads, go ahead and try it once more.
-
I was logged in each time I tried. When clicking on the above, it does change to include my username. But after I’m logged in it stayed as it is above.
I tried it again, and it is still not connecting. I removed the widget and tried again as well, but still a no go.
-
When clicking on the above, it does change to include my username. But after I’m logged in it stayed as it is above.
That’s what I’d noticed as well: the address stays the same if you’re logged in. If not, it changes to include the username. And I think that might be where we’re running into trouble, but I’m not sure.
Knowing that you were logged into Goodreads when trying to add the widget helps. Thanks for that.
At this point though I do think it’s a bug. If you’d like we can ask one of my colleagues who was able to get it working to add the ID for you, otherwise we can wait to hear back from the developers and update you here.
-
I’ll wait to hear back. I’m in no hurry. I was just doing some cleanup and realized I’d never added it. No big deal. It’s gone without for years now, what’s a little more time?
