Graphics and maps

Hi. I am really struggling with two interlinked issues, essentially based around trying to create and insert graphics and pictures into a blog draft.
Did WordPress change the process for inserting pictures into a draft some months (even a year plus) back? I might be doing this wrong but it seems it used to be simple and intuitive. Now it feels complicated and I have to remember in which order the several-step process has be completed. Is it possible for me to find an image, for example via a Google search, and then copy and paste straight into a blog draft? I can’t do it. Seems I have to save it into my own photos file and then transfer it into the WordPress file that comes up when I want to add an image from the blog draft page and then, only then, can I select it to go into the draft. Just please explain for me the quickest way to stick a picture into a blog draft article?
Second issue – any recommendations for the best way to be able to find a map, draw all over it – text, arrows, lines, etc and save it and then load it into a blog draft. I have been trying to copy maps onto a Word document. I can then insert text boxes and all the things I want, but when I save it only the map is saved – no text boxes, nothing. I know this is not a strictly a WordPress concern, but grateful for any suggestions on the best and simplest way to copy/create/edit maps and pictures able to go into a blog. Particular issue – is it possible to take a snapshot of a Google map and edit it and put it into a WordPress blog draft?
Otherwise very happy with the WordPress system.
    Many thanks!
    Tim
