hacked by someone asking for a ransom payment
-
On February 14 I got an email on my aol account from someone named Darren Crepin who said he had hacked my wordpress account (wtimlen.wordpress.com) and through that hack had gotten full access to my computer. The threat was that if I didn’t send him $995 via bitcoin in 48 hours he would use robo and cloud technology to add my name and aol account to porn sites throughout the net, ruining my reputation. It is now more than 48 hours and nothing has happened yet. But I do want to report this in case something breaks later and also to alert you that your site is possibly being hacked for criminal purposes.

I’ve had many similar emails. They were all just trying to scare me into sending them money. Just one of them did have a password I had actually used on a different forum (since closed) from ten years ago and claimed they would use it to hack my Wix account. (I don’t have a Wix account). But no one uses the same password for all their different accounts do they (I hope). It may be prudent to change your email and WordPress.com passwords to be on the safe side. Don’t reply to the scammers or click on any of their links. Eventually they give up and move on looking for another target.
