Hacked links

  • Unknown's avatar

It would appear my (free) wordpress site has had a hacked code added to it making large referrals to a website possibly in India. These cause irregular but frequent spikes in stats. Can the site be cleaned up? I don’t want the blog blacklisting by Google etc which I understand it can be, and don’t have to knowledge to do this myself. Any help or advice please?

It took a look at your website https://aviationtrails.wordpress.com/ and I can’t find abnormalities. You mentioned the problem of spikes in stats about 2 months ago, https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/stats-spike/.
If you see strange links on your website, it’s possible your webbrowser got infected with malware. So check your browser and your computer for malware.

Hi many thanks for the reply. There has been a number of referrers since then that I have tagged as spam, These seem to have stopped Appearing but a link does keep appearing 7755w.com which is a hack link. I can’t get rid of it and there are literally hundreds of hits from India. These are not related to the blog.

The spikes appear on whatever device I use so are not browser problems. The advice I was given before was to ignore these spikes, as only I see them, but they are annoying and Can lead to forget hack problems. I also understand that google can block blog sites if inappropriate adverts appear due to hacks. I am pretty sure the site has had links added to it, (7755bmw.com) but don’t know how to get rid of them. Any other help you can offer would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Andy,

but a link does keep appearing 7755w.com which is a hack link

Could you clarify where that’s appearing? If it’s just showing up in your Referrers in stats, your customers won’t see that.

We don’t have a way to remove their visits from your stats numbers, but you can remove the referrer link so you don’t click on it:

    Hi

Many thanks for replying. The link 7755BMW.com appears in the ‘clicks’ section. When I have seen spam referrers I have marked them as spam as per the instructions, these no longer appear to be showing in my lists.

All the spikes are linked to the home page, for example, on Aug 16, there were (in my stats) 1133 hits, of which 920 were the home page, and 895 were from India.

On average I was getting about 120 views a day most of which were the US or UK, which is why I’m concerned.

Personally I use stats to see which pages /posts are doing well and which are not, with these I can no longer do that which is frustrating.

There doesn’t seem a way to locate the link 7755BMW and I have considered changing the ‘home page’ but don’t really want to do this unless I have to. I don’t even know if this will help the issue.

I have also wondered about upgrading from the ‘free’ version but again don’t want to unless I know its going to work correctly.

I am also concerned that Inappropriate ads may appear, google has been known to block WordPress accounts that have been hacked in this way.

If this is something I have to live with then so be it, as long as my readers are not affected and they are not being referred to these spam sites.

Any further advice you can give would be Very much appreciated.

    Thanks again

    Andy

  • Hi there,

Links to that 7755BMW site you’re seeing on your Stats Clicks sections don’t necessarily have to be inside your posts or pages. They can be placed in comments left by your readers. They can also be attached to the names of those who leave comments.

Thank you for the help. It’ll probably never be found then.

  • You can search for that in your Comments section, you might find it there.

Also, keep in mind that some spam bots do falsify click records, the same way they falsify referrer records.

Thank you. I’ve Now searched there and nothing’s come up.
