  I am trying to upload my own custom header. I have the right dimensions, and when I upload, on the side bar of the customizer it says that it is my current header image. However, the od photo from a previous theme I used remains. I’m not sure how to get rid of it or post my own header image.

  I was able to fix mine! When you open your header images to upload, make sure the current one that won’t go away isn’t embedded. If the image is embedded it will appear instead of the uploaded header. Delete the embedded one.
