Help

    Hi WordPress,

If I share I blog with someone and they close their account, does that mean the blog will be deleted from both of us?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, only the owner can delete his blog.

So what you are saying is that if there are two admins of one blog and one admin deletes his account, the other admin will still have access to the blog?

The reason why I am confused is that WordPress says when you delete your account all your sites are deleted with it.

    Thank you for your help!

It’s not a good idea to have two Admins as the other Admin would have the power to delete the site. Best to make them an Editor. See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

Hi, that’s a very good question. There is a difference between a site that you registered on WordPressdotcom (and so are the site owner) and a site you are added to as a user.

If you are not the site owner, the site itself will not be deleted when you delete your account. As it says in our guide to closing your account:

This not only shuts down your username, it deletes all the sites you own and all their contents.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/close-account/

If you want your posts to be removed from a site you were added to, you either need to do that prior to deleting your account (in either the Admin or Editor role) or ask the site owner to delete them for you.

I’ve also tagged this thread for Staff input on the topic. Given that it is a holiday, the reply may be a little slower, but thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

and a site you are added to as a user.

    @justjennifer
Hi. So if an Admin adds another user as an Admin that second Admin can close their account without affecting the site (but they would still have the power to delete the site via “Settings” “delete your site permanently”). As time went on you’d need to be careful to keep track of which Admin actually owned/created the site! My brain hurts.

  • Hi there,

As @justjennifer described it above is spot-on.

If someone closes an account, all sites they own are also deleted. If the site has other admins, they will no longer have access to the site.

But if someone is not an owner of a site, their user will just be removed from the site, with the site not otherwise being affected.

So if an Admin adds another user as an Admin that second Admin can close their account without affecting the site (but they would still have the power to delete the site via “Settings” “delete your site permanently”).

    Exactly.

So if the owner of the site changes their role to an editor, will the ownership be passed on to the other admin?

In other words, how does one admin (the owner of the site) delete their account so the site still exists and the other admin still has access to it?

@staartmees said higher up in this thread, only the owner of a site can delete it.
As the owner is always an Admin, they couldn’t downgrade to the role of an Editor. So in your scenario the ownership of the site would need to be transferred to the other account. It wouldn’t happen automatically.
