  I need to change my domain name to something a little shorter so my clients will have a better chance of remembering the site

  Hi there, by “shorter” do you mean a .wordpress.com address without the numbers? You’d need to come up with a unique name and there are some great suggestions on creating domain names (whether free or using a custom domain name) in these articles: https://wordpress.com/go/tag/domain/ If you find something you like and want to change your site address, you can follow this guide to changing your site address https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/

  You can also register .blog subdomains. Have you seen https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2018/11/28/announcing-free-dotblog-subdomains/
