Help with database copy in SQL format

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I desperately, urgently need a copy of the database in SQL format for my blog so I can upload it to the hosting company I just signed up for. They told me they could help get it up right away, but now they say they need a copy. I do not want my blog to be down in the day which is why I did this at night. If someone could please get back to me as soon as possible, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

This guide will step you through the process of moving your blog to a WordPress.org instance: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

As we only support blogs hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new blog–including the importing of the file–must be taken to the WordPress.org support community: http://wordpress.org/support

If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com blog to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

I’m sorry, but WordPress has the worst support system ever. I’ve been trying for two days to get my blog moved to a hosting company and I can’t do it because the hosting company says I need a copy of the database in SQL format so they tell me to contact WordPress, but you can’t contact wordpress because there is no phone number and all that happens when you write a message is they direct you to forums. Also, wordpress won’t release a copy of the database so I have to figure out how to move my sight myself, which I can’t figure out. But hey, wordpress will do it for you if you have $120 laying around. The blogging software is good, the support is horrible!

Have you followed the steps in the guide I gave you before? There’s not need to have a SQL file. You can easily export your content at ‘Tools’ -> ‘Export’ in your blog’s dashboard.

I don’t know how to follow the steps. I understand that I am inept in back end website abilities, but I can’t even download the WordPress.org software. All I get are a bunch of files I don’t know what to do with. I can’t follow the “Easy 5 minute download instructions” because they say things like,”Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it,” and “Open wp-config.php in a text editor and fill in your database details as explained in Editing wp-config.php to generate and use your secret key password.”

I don’t know what any of that means or how to do it, and there is no technical support at wordpress to help walk me through it, and the hosting company, Bluehost, (which is from the recommended hosting site list on WordPress) won’t help me because they don’t know what to do either. All they keep saying is, “Contact wordpress.”

    Sure, how?

  • If you’re interested, we do offer an upgrade called Guided Transfer (available in the Store section of your blog’s Dashboard) where we take care of everything for you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Otherwise, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on your hosting provider. We have some recommendations at http://get.wp.com/hosting/

Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.

WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress at:

We do offer yearly and one-time premium support packages for self-hosted WordPress sites through our VIP program, available at http://vip.wordpress.com

This is what I mean about wordpress. It costs $120 to get help to transfer my blog to a hosting company, otherwise someone comes on and posts a bunch of links to instructions I don’t know how to follow because it involves terminology I know nothing about. I’ve signed up with 2 hosting companies that don’t even know how to help me. If they don’t know what to do, how am I supposed to know? It’s like they make it complicated on purpose so I have to pay $120. Frustrating!

By the way, I’m not paying $15,000 to get someone on the phone through your “support package”. Am I buying a Jeep?

  • Well, the key distinction here is that this is support for WordPress.com. You’re asking about installing the WordPress.org software, which is a separate entity from us.

For help with that, you need to contact the folks at http://wordpress.org/support/

Installing WordPress.org is free, as is support from WordPress.org, but if you want us (at WordPress.com) to take care of that for you, it does cost a fee.
