Help with header and menu appearance

Hello – I am trying to reduce the white space that appears at the top of my site and also change the alignment of my top nav menu. I currently have an image at the top of my site:

    Emma Hill, Writes
    Producer, Writer, Director

I would like less white space directly beneath it and then less white space also below the top nav menu (less white space under the black line, above the page title).

Top nav menu alignment – I want the top nav menu to align with the right hand edge of my page body content, rather been aligned right to the edge of the right hand of the site – this looks especially bad on mobile, where the menu is disappearing off the edge of the page.

Thank you in advance for your help and please let me know if anything requires clarification.

It sounds like your theme has some default padding values that are creating those large gaps around your header and navigation. To pull the content up, you’ll want to look for the ‘Header’ or ‘Layout’ settings in your Customizer and see if there is a slider for ‘Vertical Padding’ or ‘Margin.’ For the alignment issue where the menu is cutting off on mobile, that usually happens when a menu is set to ‘Float Right’ without a container limit; changing the menu alignment to ‘Right’ within your site’s header settings—rather than a hard-coded right alignment—should pull it back in line with your page body and keep it from disappearing off the screen on smaller devices!

  • Hi there! :) I took a look at your site, and I can see you’re using a classic theme. With these themes, spacing and alignment (like the white space around your header and how the menu is positioned) are controlled by the theme’s default styles.

The extra space you’re seeing above and below the header appears to be caused by built-in padding or margins. Similarly, the menu stretching to the far right, especially on mobile, is part of how the theme handles navigation layout.

In this case, your classic theme doesn’t offer built-in settings to adjust these areas, so making those kinds of changes would typically require some custom CSS.

If you’re open to it, another option would be to try a block theme, which gives you much more control over spacing and alignment without needing code. Since your home content is already set up on your “Welcome” page, it should carry over easily if you switch themes. We have some information about how to switch from a Classic theme to a Block theme here as well: https://wordpress.com/support/migrate-from-a-classic-theme-to-a-block-theme/

The Twenty Twenty-Five theme could be a great option to explore, as it offers a similar look and feel to your current theme!
