Hide Posts

    Hello,

I’d like to keep certain posts hidden except via a shared link – which should be disabled after the user has viewed it once.

If my question is not clear, here is an example –

A user requests for a link which is sent to him
He clicks on the link and views the page
Once he has done that the link should no longer be available for viewing
If said user does not view the link within a specified time it should be disabled

Also if possible prevent sharing the link with others.

Is this possible? If yes how?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @bricabrac892, you would need a plugin to support that, which would require a Business Plan for our services.

And, most folks in these forums have a free WordPress site hosted here with us, and thus can’t install plugins without upgrading. And since the upgraded sites come with direct support, those users don’t typically hang out here. So you’ll likely find more relevant information if you’ll try the other forum.

I searched and found this, for example:

    And more here:

    Ok. Thanks.
Also in stats – as I understand it –
VIEWS represent repeat visitors during the period selected
VISITORS represent new visitors during the period selected.

Can I know where these visitors are coming from? The references section is not very enlightening – it just gives the number.

  • We track where site visitors come from in two ways: referrer headers and geolocation.

In the referrers section it shows if someone reached your site by clicking a link to a post shared on another site. This includes places your posts might have been shared via social media, and also people who reach your site via search engines like Google, the WordPress.com Reader, and subscription emails.

But this is limited. We can only log a referrer if the site where they clicked that link sends a referrer header – some sites don’t send those, and some, like Facebook, only includes the root domain as the source (we can see traffic came from Facebook.com, but they don’t tell us on which specific Facebook post the link was clicked) – and visitors themselves can block referrer tracking in their browser, in which case we just don’t get any data we can record in stats.

Geolocation tells you where in the world a visitor is from based on their IP address. But again that is limited – if someone uses a VPN to obscure their actual IP the visit will appear as coming from a different country as where the person is actually located, and you can also block this type of tracking in your browser, in which case no stat is recorded there at all.

So there is no way to know exactly where your site visitors are coming from. At best you can get a general idea, and this is by design to protect the privacy of people visiting your site.

    Thanks!

    One more clarification please –

VIEWS represent repeat visitors during the period selected
VISITORS represent new visitors during the period selected.

When you say VISITORS represent new visitors during the period selected. you mean brand new visitors who have never visited my website or just those who landed for the first time that day?

Similarly Views are repeat visitors for the day or it includes those who have visited on the previous day or prior to that?

  • Hi @bricabrac892, you’ll notice in your stats that you can select weeks, months, etc. That’s what we’re talking about re: during the period selected.

So generally, if you’re viewing data for the week and someone has visited multiple times during the week, they’ll be counted as one visitor.

But if they’re visiting the site from multiple browsers, or if they’re clearing their cache and cookies between visits, it will be harder to recognize that they’re a repeat visitor.

Did you get a chance to read this, by the way? It may help answer your questions:

    Hey Supernovia,

    Thanks for clarifying this.

But if they’re visiting the site from multiple browsers, or if they’re clearing their cache and cookies between visits, it will be harder to recognize that they’re a repeat visitor.
    I understand.

So generally, if you’re viewing data for the week and someone has visited multiple times during the week, they’ll be counted as one visitor.

When you say 1 VISITOR you mean 1 NEW VISITOR right?
So for instance on a given day if my stats show 5 VIEWS and 2 VISITORS it means that there were 2 NEW VISITORS ON THAT DAY (assuming everyone uses the same browser and does not clear their cache and cookies) right?

And views are all repeat visitors?

  • Unknown's avatar

So in general, on a particular day / week if it says 5 views and 2 visitors it means that I had 2 BRAND NEW VISITORS WHO HAVE NEVER VISITED MY SITE BEFORE?

    And 5 REPEAT VISITORS?

Assuming of course that they have not changed their browser or cleared their cache and cookies.

  • So for instance on a given day if my stats show 5 VIEWS and 2 VISITORS it means that there were 2 NEW VISITORS ON THAT DAY

That means two people, or more accurately, two unique browser sessions, connected to your site in that time period. And between those two browser sessions, they viewed a total of 5 pages on your site.

    Thanks that helps.

I’d like to create a scrolling image banner at the bottom of my screen that scrolls no matter which page or post the visitor is viewing.

Is this possible? If so how?

  • We don’t currently have anything exactly like that.

Which images were you planning to display? Perhaps we have a close alternative.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. I’d be using images from those I uploaded on WP (my gallery?). I’d like to select the images to use.

Is it even possible to use other images?

  • Unknown's avatar

A revolving carousel will also work – like the one popularly being used for COVID updates.

Please let me know if either one is possible under my current plan and if so how?

  • I’m afraid something like this would also require a plugin.

If you’d like to opt for something more static you could add the Slideshow Block to the bottom of each page/post:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/slideshow-block/

Also, remember that with your plan you can access support directly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact.
