Home page settings twenty sixteen – Full page width Meta Slider
-
I’m reaching out to see if anyone can advise me on creating a full page slider for my home page.
I can set a large featured image – but I can’t see how to insert the meta slider as a full width presentation. The home page settings do seem overly restrictive on the theme I use. I don’t have any knowledge of custom css code and have tried numerous plug ins. The Meta Sider plug Itself works well for what want.
If anyone can help that would be great!
kind regards
Alan

Hi,
Have you considered leaving the sidebar widget area empty? Doing so, with the Twenty Sixteen theme applied results in pages, including a static front page, adopting the full-width layout described in the “No Sidebar Layout” section of the Twenty Sixteen theme guide. With the sidebar area eliminated, the width of the slider on your homepage might automatically expand to full-width.
The images displayed in the sidebar widget area on your About and Bio pages could instead be included in those pages, respectively.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
To get a ‘full width’ image on the home page previously, I did this:
1. Used the ‘set a ‘featured Image’ option on the homepage
2. Disabled/excluded the sidebar widget on the homepage only.
This worked – but if I try to do the same with a meta slider (or Next Gen Gallery) – the slider/gallery ends up sitting rather awkwardly in the middle of the page – and looks out of sync with my name and the menu bar. This seems to be because you don’t seem to be able to set anything other than a static image as ‘featured’. It makes the home page very limiting in my opinion.
To overcome this I’ve added a text only widget (which appears as a single horizontal line) to make the metal slider at least sit to one side of the home page. Really though I’d like the gallery to stretch right across the page. Or at least try it!
I hope this is a bit clearer. Any help much appreciated. I will look at the theme guide you mention as well, so thanks for the link.
Kind regards
Alan

Hello there,
We’d love to help if you wanted to bring your site over to our service at WordPress.com. It looks like it’s currently hosted at another company.
It sounds like the block alignment isn’t quite right. This guide we have for WordPress.com sites might give some clues too: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/change-the-width-of-a-block/
But, as I say, if you would like to move over to our service, we’d be delighted to help you with your site going forward into the future.

Hi, many thanks I will look at the guide.
My site was set up on my behalf, and I believe is hosted by vidahost. It works out to be very economical for me. However, If I were to move over Ito WordPress would I benefit from more themes/more flexibility in design?

Hi Alan, with Twenty Sixteen the layout is pretty narrow by default. To get a full-width Meta Slider you’ll likely need a bit of custom CSS or use a child theme. If you’re not comfortable with code, a page builder plugin might make it easier.

Hey @arhath22cb6e61ba!
Good question! WordPress.com hosts quite a few themes in its theme showcase and you can check them all here:
The good thing is that, if you want to customize things further, beyond what the theme offers, you can surely do that with a Site Editor theme, as the classic ones, like Twenty Sixteen, are, as mentioned above, pretty limited when it comes to customization. You could definitely create a child theme by following this guide too:
If you have knowledge of HTML and PHP, you can create a child theme to safely customize a WordPress theme without losing your changes when the original theme (the parent theme) is updated. In this guide, you will learn how to create and use a child theme on your WordPress.com site. In this guideHow child themes workUse the Create Block Theme pluginManually create a child themeSHowever, I would only recommend that if you’re comfortable making these changes, then using the Site editor or another builder might be best. Speaking of them, did you know we also offer an AI builder with our Premium plan? If you’re curious how this works, please give it a shot starting here:
