Host migration
-
Hi,
I’m planning to move my domain from the current host provider to WordPress. Since I have associated several email address to my current domain, I was wondering how to make the the move without losing emails in the transition. How long would it take to port the same email address from one host to another?Regarding the actual domain migration, should I contact my current host first? My actual situation is: I own the domain, but from some years I redirected it to a free WordPress website. Long story short: I already have everything on WordPress, so I just need to transfer my domain name to it and then upgrade to the Personal Plan.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
In order for your current email to continue functioning after moving the domain over to WordPress.com, you will need to obtain the custom DNS records from your email provider and add them to your WordPress settings:
How long would it take to port the same email address from one host to another?
The email should start working within a few hours of updating the records.
Regarding the actual domain migration, should I contact my current host first?
You may need to contact your current registrar to unlock your domain and receive the authorization (EPP) code in order to begin the transfer process. You can read up on the entire transfer process on our support page:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Take a look and let me know if you have any trouble with adding the records or any other questions.
Thanks,

Hey, thanks for your reply.
I’ve contacted my provider and they mentioned an Auth Code, necessary for the domain transfer. They added that my domain is not locked and it can be moved (which then I wonder why I have that code). I don’t know if this is enough in terms of informations to proceed. What I’m concerned about is my main email address. I guess I could do this transfer over the weekend, when my correspondence is at a minimum (at least with clients). Do you know if it takes just a couple of hours or if can be more than a day? Is there any way to not lose any email in this transition?
Many thanks

PS. besides this forum is there any other type of support feature on WP, to start planning my full transition to you as a host? I would like to get it sorted sooner than later.
Thanks

Yes. There is email and live chat support available on the upgraded plans. You’ll need one of those plans to do the domain transfer. As soon as the plan is added to your account you can get help through https://wordpress.com/help/contact/
**Please note that live chat support will not be open until Monday**
Our entire company is at the annual Grand Meetup and everyone is traveling home over the next few days. This closure is only once per year. But we can still help via email.
