Hosting/Domains

    Hi!
I currently have a food and travel blog on Tumblr but am looking to move to WordPress. I am extremely confused about the steps involved in a move. I already have my own domain, which I purchased through Blacknight Security – would I still have to purchase an account with BlueHost or similar??

  • Hi there,

That depends on whether you want to use the open source version of WordPress made on WordPress.org, or the managed version we use here on WordPress.com.

To start with, if your domain is currently connected to your Tumblr site, disconnect that first in your Tumblr dashboard. The Tumblr importer for WordPress only works with sites on free *.tumblr.com URLs.

If you go for the open source version, you’ll need to sign up for hosting plan at a provider like Bluehost. Then you’ll install the WordPress software there, and connect your domain. Lastly you’ll install a Tumblr Importer plugin to migrate your Tumblr content to the new site.

If you go with us, start by creating a new site at https://wordpress.com/start/site/ – we handle the WordPress installation for you.

Once the site is created, go to My Site ->Tools ->Import, and click where it says “Choose from full list”. That will take you to a page where you can select a Tumblr import option, and then just follow the prompts on the screen:

    Import from Tumblr

To use your own domain with us, you’ll need to upgrade to one of our paid plans, then you can either transfer the domain to us, or just connect it here while keeping it registered at Blacknight.
