Hosting expired, but domain still linked to wordpress

    Hey, just wondering if anyone can help me. I’m a bit of a weird predicament.

    Basic run-down of the issue I’m having:

    The hosting for my wordpress.org site connected to http://www.thelunarmouse.co.uk expired on 25th March 2022. I was hosting with siteground. Apparently they keep your data for 7 days (or 30 days according to some pages I’ve read), but it has been longer than that, so my data should have been deleted by now.
    The domain (registered with GoDaddy) also expired on the 21st April, but that was protected and I have since renewed it.

    Since my siteground hosting had expired, and my domain was no longer connected at their end, I decided to switch to hosting with GoDaddy. I paid for hosting, then linked my domain, and changed the nameservers.

    But when I try to edit the site, or go to wp-admin, it says the site cannot be reached.

    Is this because my previous hosting provider is still connected to the domain in some way? Do I need to manually delete my old WordPress data, before I create the new site through GoDaddy?

    I am unable to contact siteground, as I no longer have a website registered with them.

    I have now disconnected GoDaddy from WordPress. But I still see that thelunarmouse.co.uk is listed as a linked site in my wordpress.com account?

    I’m not sure how to proceed. Are you able to unlink my website? And would I then be able to start a new wordpress site at that domain? Or would the old data still exist? Is there a way for me to regain access to wp-admin for that domain?

    Apologies if I haven’t explained that well. Any and all help very much appreciated.

    Hi there,

    We can’t help directly because we don’t host thelunarmouse.co.uk on our WordPress.com managed hosting. As a result, we can’t take a closer look at your site.

    With this in mind, I can give you some general advice here, and point you to the correct help contacts to move forward.

    When I visit thelunarmouse.co.uk, I see a GoDaddy hosted site. When you change your domain settings (as you appear to have done), it can take some time before they “take effect,” so I can see how you might have noticed that error message for a while, but I can confirm I see a site now when I visit that address.

    To clarify this point, we have not hosted your site in the past and do not have any historical data (backups) on our end. You see this connection because of the Jetpack plugin that was installed on thelunarmouse.co.uk previously.

    Jetpack is a plugin that connects your self-hosted WordPress site with the cloud functionality we offer pre-built on WordPress.com. It does not include backups unless you upgrade, and I see no sign that you have upgraded Jetpack but were using the free version of the plugin.

    I’m not sure how to proceed. Are you able to unlink my website? And would I then be able to start a new wordpress site at that domain? Or would the old data still exist? Is there a way for me to regain access to wp-admin for that domain?

    You are welcome to add the Jetpack plugin to your site on GoDaddy, and when you add the plugin you will be asked to connect to your WordPress.com account, and the functionality should pick up where it left off. No backups sadly, but you would have the full functionality of Jetpack as it was on your previous host attached to this same connection.

    As for your old data, it sounds like you have reached out to your previous host and they say they do not have a backup? If that is the case then sadly there is not another alternative. The only one I can think of is to check Google cache to see if they saved any snapshots of the site from the time it was online still, but they did not have much that I could find.
