Hosting location and other queries

When I build my website using wordpress (be it free or paid plan), where exactly is my site hosted? Is there an option where I could host it closer to my country location?

Does the hosting include DNS hosting? Meaning if I already have a domain registered elsewhere and my domain registrar didn’t provide me DNS hosting, does word press hosting includes the DNS hosting as well?

If wordpress does host it for us, can I know if it includes CDN? Or do we have to engage a 3rd party CDN service like cloudflare should we want to use CDN for our site?

Lastly, what is the difference if we were to sign up for WordPress package directly as compared to using our own hosting provider wordpress website builder? It’s a different wordpress? Confused as this area as well.

Appreciate the clarification to all of the above. Thanks!

When you build your website here at WordPress.com, WordPress.com is hosting it. If you purchase a hosting plan from another company and install the free WordPress software and design your site there, then that company is your webhost.

I’m not sure I fully understand what you mean by “DNS hosting”. If you own a domain with another registrar, you can map it to a WordPress.com site by changing your name servers and purchasing a Domain Mapping upgrade. You then have full access to your DNS settings and can add or remove any DNS records you’d like.

Some registrars who only sell domains with their hosting plans don’t let you have access to your DNS settings, like Wix. But you can always transfer that domain to a new registrar and update your DNS settings there.

What exact features are you looking for here?

Lastly, what is the difference if we were to sign up for WordPress package directly as compared to using our own hosting provider wordpress website builder? It’s a different wordpress?

WordPress.com is a shared hosting platform for the free open source WordPress software. Our version of WordPress is very similar to the free version you can get from WordPress.org, with the exception of the features we’ve released in the free Jetpack plugin.

Here’s some more information about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

When you build a site with WordPress.com, your actual hosting is free. The plans we offer add features to your site, like extra space and more design customizations. But you can keep your site here at WordPress.com for free with a free theme and a URL that ends with .wordpress.com, like mdshamx.wordpress.com.

Does that clarify things for you? Let me know if you have more questions!
