How can i accept all incoming comments

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to find a way to accept all incoming comments without having to manually approve them. I think this will impede my progress. Is there a way I can post a blog and accept ALL comments, then if I don’t like the comment, delete it later?

    Thanks

    David

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That can be done but I do NOT recommend removing comment moderation simply because 83% of all comments received on our blogs are spam each and every day. The main page for Discussion/Comment settings is found here. > Settings > Discussion

thank you very much. I will check this out. I was wondering. If you have to give an email address, how do you get 83% spam? Let me know, I am very new to this page and I really want to set up my home here if I can.

I got the 83% of all comments being received are spam number from the Akismet site. All wordpress.com blogs are equipped with Akismet which does an excellent job of filtering out spam and sequestering spam for removal. It is the leading spam filter.

However, I would never in a million years choose not to moderate my comments or recommend that others do that.

    1. I am aware that everything posted to my blog has the potential of either contributing positively or negatively to my brand.

    2. I am aware that most spam is bot generated but now people have been hired by spammers to post phony baloney spam comments to blogs so the spam link gets posted.

    3. Every day I witness the fact that bloggers are either allowing autoposting of spam or are so desperate to receive comments and so lacking in the ability to know what is spam that they are approving spam comments and posting it. What I witness in terms of wordpress.com bloggers allowing spam to be posted to their blogs is an increase since the migration of Windows Live Spaces bloggers to wordpress.com.

You will not find a better blogging platform to blog on than wordpress.com which has Akismet. What is required is that (1) bloggers become educated as to what comment spam is and meticulous about marking any that slips through the Akismet filter as ‘”spam”. (2) Bloggers lean how to spot trackback and pingback spam as well and treat it the same way as comment spam.

I get around 96% spam comments – and a few get past Akismet and moderation keeps my site clean – listen to @timethief – if the spammers figure out you can be beat you could easily have several hundred spam comments to clean out after only a day or two.

Maybe I’m not understanding the term “moderate”. I would be moderating the comments, but if, a blog is written and someone comments on it, or a someone comments on a comment, currently, I have to approve it to be seen. Is that right? That would slow progress down, because I would have to be constantly going back and checking to see if a comment was written to approve it so others can comment on it. I was wanting to allow them to comment and comment on comments and if I felt it was inappropriate or spam, I would delete it. Kinda like the old myspace. We used to run our page out of Myspace and each blog we did would have anywhere from 300 to 800 comments. We would pick a poetic topic and everyone would write to it, then everyone would comment on everyones work. We were doing that twice a week. So you see how that would slow me down as well as everyone else waiting for me to approve so they all can see?

Saying all that, (I know it was a mouth full) maybe turning off the “approval” button was the wrong wording. How should I approach it.?

Thank you very much for your patience

YES! Now you are rocking! :)

Is there any harm in approving spam comments? If yes, what are some of the main ones? Thank you in advance.

If you approve a spam comment, the spammer and spambots will see that and flood your site with spam. It is always best to mark any spam comments that get through akismet as spam so that akismet will learn and start blocking them. Spammers are constantly probing for weak spots, and if they get a comment onto a site, they will hammer it hard.
