How can I cancel the domain name I registered today?
-
Hi,
I started to set up a new wordpress.com site today, only to discover that I can’t use iframes – the entire site is to share videos that are embedded with iframes! I’m happy to set up a wordpress.org site instead, but need the domain name that I registered this morning.
I don’t want to do a whole transfer as I literally have no content on it yet and waiting for 60 days to launch the site isn’t an option – can I cancel the domain name and re-register it, or otherwise point it to a self hosted site?
Thanks@

Hi Claire,
If you want to keep that domain name, I’d highly recommend not canceling it. It can sometimes take a few weeks for a newly registered domain name to be released again after it’s cancelled, and there’s no guarantee you’d be able to register it again.
Instead, you can point the domain to your new host now, and then transfer it entirely after 60 days: Move Your Domain to Another Host
You don’t need to wait the 60 days to point your domain to a new host, so you can start using it at your new host right away. Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thanks for this! I have been trying to point the domain name to my server, but have had no luck – it saves, but doesn’t update – I know that could take a while, but I went back in to check and the name servers had reverted to the default wordpress ones. I’m wondering if I’m pasting the wrong thing into the custom name servers box – should it be numbers?

Hi Claire,
The name servers should look similar to a website address, like the WordPress.com ones:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Can you please let me know what name servers you’re trying to enter for your domain, and what website host your new site is on? That will help me investigate this for you.

Okay, so not the numbers that follow it? It’s Bluehost, so they are ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com (I think!)
However, I think I’ve screwed up again! I’ve been setting up the self hosted site at http://www.powderkeglive.net, and I noticed that under general settings I could update the domain name, which I did, to http://www.powderkeglive.com, which is the one I want to use.
However, it’s now going round and circles trying to point to the wordpress.com site that I originally set up, and I can’t even log in to change it back!
All I want is for the domain http://www.powderkeglive.com to point to the self hosted site at http://www.powderkeglive.net – please help, I’ve already completely (it seems) lost one website with an entire year of work on it in this debacle!!

403 Forbidden
nginx
This is what I get when I try to log into http://www.powderkeglive.net/wp-login.php

Hi Claire,
Those two Bluehost name servers you mentioned are the right ones to enter for your domain. Those were entered and saved correctly, so everything is set up on this end to point your domain to your site hosted with Bluehost. (However, it can sometimes take up to 72 hours for domain changes like that to take effect everywhere.)
If you’re having trouble with your Bluehost site, you’ll need to contact Bluehost for additional help with that. (The support staff here at WordPress.com don’t have the tools or access to help with sites hosted elsewhere.) You can contact Bluehost for more help here:

You can also get help with self-hosted WordPress sites from the WordPress.org forums here:
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that!
