How can I delete my domain, so that it's possible to register it somewhere else?

I’d really appreciate some help with this one!

I decided to move from WordPress to Squarespace. I wanted to take my WordPress custom domain, “coltcopy.com,” with me, but Squarespace doesn’t allow the nameserver changing technique that WordPress recommends. I’d transfer to a different registrar, but I am unable to wait 60 days. It seems to me that the only option is to delete my domain and register it again via Squarespace or Godaddy or someone else. Am I right in thinking this, and is it possible to do?

Thank you for reading – I would really appreciate some advice!

I’ve cancelled my wordpress premium upgrade, and it appears I still have the domain, but as I bought the domain more than 2 days ago, i can’t cancel it. How can I permanently cancel the domain?

All my findings point back to “contacting support” in order to delete the domain. I can’t find another way to contact support other than this forum. Could somebody please delete the domain for me?

However, if the domain is deleted, will that mean I might not be able to register it elsewhere, like through squarespace or godaddy? Would it be best to wait the 60 days to transfer it to another registrar and use a different domain in the meantime?

  • Hi there, canceling a domain after 2 days of purchase means you completely give up ownership of the domain. There is no guarantee the domain will become available to re-register after cancellation. Since you intend to keep the domain I strongly suggest you don’t have us cancel the domain. :-) That route is only for folks who think they will never need their domain again.

You are welcome to keep your domain with us and I will be glad to help you point the domain to Squarespace for you. Just let me know and I’ll go ahead and set that up for you.

After 60 days from the date of purchase or registrant contact information change, you can then transfer your domain to another registrar by following this guide:

Hi Kathryn, thank you so much for your reply.

My squarespace URL is currently harrison-christian.squarespace.com.

I’ve tried to link coltcopy.com as my primary domain, and this is the message squarespace gives:

“This domain is not correctly pointing to Squarespace.
You must change these records to point to Squarespace within your domain registrar’s interface. Click here for more information.

Please note, if you have recently used our guide to map your custom domain, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to DNS settings to resolve.

Thanks again – I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it!

  • Hi there, I’ve configured your domain to point to your Squarespace site. It looks like you need to upgrade from a trial account in order to publish it.

If you can’t see the Squarespace message here yet – http://coltcopy.com/ – please try a different browser, or refresh your browser cache. You may also need to wait a little longer for the DNS to fully propagate.

I also copied over your Zoho email DNS records into the advanced domain manager. Please ensure that your email is working.

Just let me know if you need further help.
