    Hi,

Regarding an image that is displaying in a post (or page), when you have duplicates of the image in the media library and want to eliminate the duplicates, it is imperative that you leave the one image that bears the attachment ID and exact image URL of the one being displayed in the post, whether it is inserted in the post or displayed in a gallery, or both. The duplicate images will each have different attachment IDs and filenames that are different from the originals only by having a number appended to the end of them. Their URLs will consequently differ in the same way.

    Example
    original filename: terrible-twosome
    duplicate 1: terrible-twosome1
duplicate 2: terrible-twosome2 (or, in some cases, terrible-twosome11)

If you still have duplicates of the missing images in your media library, you can resolve the issue by painstakingly attaching each duplicate of a missing image to the corresponding post, and then replacing the missing image with the duplicate in the post content.
