How can I make my gallery page load faster?
-
I have the Photographer theme and within it I’ve set up a gallery page. All of the images were uploaded at 72 res and I’m displaying them at full size. My problem is that the page loads very slowly, so that there’s a couple of seconds of a blank page with just the head displaying. How can I speed it up without deleting images or reducing their size (I’m a photographer and it’s important for me to be able to display images at a size where they’ll have maximum impact). I wanted to install the W3 Total Cache Plugin, but that’s not allowed on my WP hosted site. Is there another option for website caching, or another solution for speeding up my site?

Hi Patty,
WordPress.com has built-in caching, but some image-heavy pages may still load more slowly the first time you visit them. I know you mentioned that you don’t want to delete images, but you may want to try creating multiple galleries pages with fewer images in each gallery. That way, you can still display all of your images but each gallery will be quicker to load.
Another option might be to try one of the standard WordPress.com galleries or slideshows, rather than the Photographer theme’s gallery, to see if any of those work better for you.
You may also want to contact the Photographer theme author directly, to see if they have any additional suggestions for optimizing the Photographer gallery. You can get in touch directly in the Photographer support forum.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
