How can I make my post display as a single, centered column?

In my posts, once a certain number of words is surpassed, a second column is formed to the right of the first. I do not know how to construct my layout so that there is a single, centered column. The Cols theme guide says,
Standard-format posts are displayed in a newspaper-like layout, with three columns on large monitors, two columns on medium-sized displays, and a one-column layout on small screens like phones. Other supported post formats — Aside, Image, Video, Quote, Link, and Chat — are displayed in a simple single-column layout.
Have you tried changing your post to one of the other post formats?
