How can I use an inactive account's username?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like another user’s login. Their account has been inactive for 6 years. I have owned the domain name they have locked up since 1999.

You can’t, unless you can somehow get in touch with them and ask them to hand over or sell you the account.

How long does WordPress wait before killing a vacated account? This particular blog was barely started and never finished. Last update was in 2006. I know some sites (like Facebook) will literally take a name away from someone if you can prove you own the rights to the name or have a copyright on the name. I thought most sites eliminate stagnant accounts after so much time.

WordPress NEVER kills a vacated account.

You cannot copyright a name. You can get an international trademark on it, but then it would be your responsibility to find the blogger and serve him with trademark infringement papers. WP.com does not provide contact information.

I actually didn’t mean copyright or trademark. I meant to say the “dot com of the name”. That’s a policy Facebook has. Ok, so this doesn’t make any sense to me that WordPress never vacates dead accounts. So you’re saying if someone has pepsi.wordpress.com locked up and it’s been dead for several years, WordPress is going to tell Pepsi there’s nothing that can be done?

WordPress and Facebook are different companies. A URL is not the same as a trademark. Whatever.wordpress.com is not the same as whatever.blogspot.com or whatever.com.

FB also has some serious issues with not respecting users’ privacy.

Short of a court order, you’re not getting the username here.

I don’t think we’re on the same page, but thanks for your time.

If anyone else knows a way to get an account freed up that has been abandoned for 6 years, please contact me. It’s not a huge deal, but I wanted to experiment with WordPress b/c my old site is dated and I wanted to keep the address simple until I get to the point of switching everything over to my dot com.

“notawoodpecker” – Just to clarify, I’m not wanting to trample on anyone’s rights or privacy or anything like that. The account in question has not been touched in 6 years. Not only that, but it looks like the initial work someone does when they sign up, not a fully developed or used page. It happens to be a dot com I’ve owned since 1999 and I’d like to have that name. Most companies will free up abandoned accounts after a period of time. That’s all I was trying to find out. The person that has my dot com on WordPress doesn’t have any contact information or anything at all on how to contact. It’s not a huge deal, I just wanted to make it easier for me.

I’ve been here for longer than most of the staff. You are not going to get that URL or username except from the person who registered them, and staff will not act as go-betweens or release personal information.

It is not “your” dot com.

No need to turn a simple question into a waste of time debate. The question I initially asked was not out of line. Most sites do eliminate abandoned accounts. I never said WordPress owed it to me to free up a domain name I own, but the actual dot com is mine. And since it is mine, I have the right to investigate the possibilities of getting it freed up on WordPress.

You came here with a simple question. You got the answer: Not possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Maybe so. We’ll see.

  • Unknown's avatar

You must have a lot of time on your hands.

  • Unknown's avatar

Apparently not as much as you.
