How come when I edit out the extra double spacing in HTML, the changes automatically revert back to their old way?

I am trying to get rid of double spacing on my WordPress post and when I delete the extra spaces on HTML view, the double spaces automatically come right back, making all my edits disappear. How do I get the changes I make to HTML to stay the way that I put them without them automatically changing back?

Which site is this for? I see you have a few on your account. Can you tell me a bit more about what you are trying to set up? Are you writing poetry or some other prose that requires specific text formatting?

Yes, it’s poetry and I need to remove the double spacing. I need to be able to edit the HTML to do that. Here’s an example of a page that is giving me this problem: https://diymfa976272932.wordpress.com/three-poems-by-kat-coolahan/

Hi there,
This is happening because you used the Paragraph block for each line. If you want to write poetry it’s best to use the Verse block:
