  Hi there,
  Categories can only be assigned to posts (not pages). Until one publishes a post with a category assigned to it there is no data that can be displayed. There are two ways you can do this:
  Adding Categories via the Dashboard http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-dashboard
  Adding Categories via the Categories Module > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-categories-module
